Many will say that we don’t have to keep up with the rigidity of a itinerary or waste hours visiting monasteries and churches to get to know a city and that there will always be a more fun and relaxed way, without being imprisoned by the outdated canons and that it is not only through history, but also through stories, that people are known and their culture.
Lisbon is a city that allows us to experience many of these experiences in its typical neighborhoods, with its gastronomy and handicrafts.
Nothing like leaving the bus in the parking areas to start a walking tour through Alfama so that we can know its hidden corners, its people sitting at the door of the house, with its spreads full of colorful clothes making the delights of the most… and the wonderful smell of food that accompanies every alley, whether it be the febra, the sardine on the grill, that any tavern or restaurant will be happy to gift under the curious and surprised eyes.
Places to visit: Feira da ladra, Museum of Azulejos (tiles), Museum of Fado. Passing by the Fado Museum and practically on the perimeter outside the neighborhood, we will return to the bus heading for the Nations Park, with an emphasis on the Lisbon Oceanarium, a world of countless aquatic species / fauna and flora that is very much appreciated by the little ones!
Stop for lunch at a riverside restaurant.
After lunch, let’s head to the city center to visit places as emblematic as the Brazilian one frequented at the beginning of the last century by our famous writer Fernando Pessoa, a few meters away, in the oldest Bookstore in Lisbon (Livraria Sá da Costa).
This zone full of the Boliço is fantastic with terraces and spaces to enjoy a sunny afternoon, but this time we will make a Solar visit of the Port Wine Solar to prove this liqueur wine, white or red. Enjoy or go down the Glória elevator to Rossio and taste the ginjinha in Largo de S. Domingos.
Various snacks will deliver a gastronomic diversity from various snacks: in the summer the snails are one of the typical meal of Lisbon, if you are brave try the baits with them, the typically alfacinha meal.
If you want a good Portuguese snack, in this central area you can try the delicate goods of the Café Alentejano, meals from this part of our country that use their raw materials and convert them into delicious meals, both from the caloric point of view and the taste.
Lisboa bynight
There are many places of interest to start a good evening in the city. Depending on the location, the range of options is varied: from Alfama, to Bairro Alto, to more recently rehabilitated areas such as Mouraria, Cais do Sodré and even Alcântara.
In the old districts Fado is often accompanied by the meal, or vice versa, in Bairro Alto and Alfama you can watch the show, which can range from the amateur fado to the professional. The best options are the Clube do Fado in Alfama and the Faia in Bairro Alto.
If you want to escape this more conventional environment you can always choose different places: Lx Factory in Alcântara is both a place where you can enjoy shopping in design shops, as you can attend concerts, exhibition, workshop. You will find bars, cafes, various artists’ ateliers…
Renovated places such as The Ribeira Market and Campo de Ourique with restaurants for all tastes and wallets, from simple tapas, and snacks of high cuisine and with the signature of the most respected Portuguese chefs.
As for places rehabilitated areas such as Mouraria and Intendente are a good example of this, once considered degraded areas, here we will find a new renewed flow of people seeking in their associations and recreative social collectivities, bars and cafes, the genesis of the Bairista traditions in a true mixture of ethnic groups which now inhabit these neighborhoods.
As for a night out, the most popular and most frequent places are Bairro Alto and Cais de Sodré, which became the area par excellence to go. Known as Pink street for its pink tramway, this place concentrates bars, pubs, discos, restaurants, cafes, all in a unique street. The Pension of Love will definitely be worth a visit.
