Azenhas do Mar
Azenhas do Mar is a village on the coast of the municipality of Sintra, parish of Colares. The place developed along the Cameijo river, which flows into the Atlantic and breaks the cliffs of the coast, and on which there were watermills (hence the name), has at its base a beach in which there is an oceanic pool.
In addition to the picturesque natural landscape, there are several interesting buildings in Azenhas, particularly in the Soft Portuguese Style, particularly with tiles on the facades, such as the school and the teacher’s residence.
From the memory of the people of the sea, devotion to Our Lady of the Sea remains, but above all, Saint Lawrence, patron saint of the land and protector of the vineyard, is celebrated, whose procession takes place every year in August, with faith in the saints and the people carry them to the seaside for the spectacular “blessing”.
