Santuário de Fátima

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima gives expression to the request of Our Lady of the Rosary, alluded to on August 13, 1917 and expressly indicated in the apparition of October 13 of that year to Lúcia de Jesus, Francisco Marto and Jacinta Marto: « I want to tell you to build a chapel here in my honor, as I am the Lady of the Rosary” (First Memory of Sister Lúcia). The chapel was built in 1919 on the site of the 1917 apparitions in Cova da Iria and, since then, the Sanctuary space has been built in response to the significant influx of pilgrims.

The Sanctuary of Fátima is a place of pilgrimage, which commemorates its founding event, the apparitions of Our Lady to the three shepherd children. The pastoral welcome of pilgrims is a fundamental element of its mission.

The Sanctuary of Fátima holds the message of the Fátima event. Its mission is to study and disseminate this message, used as a means of evangelization in Portugal and the world.

The Sanctuary of Fátima is, by express will of the Apostolic See, a National Sanctuary.
